First Impressions, The Impossible Game vs. That Really Hot Chick

Final Verdict

First Impressions:

Well after one night (hour and a halfish) of evenly playing these games I am conflicted. I know for a fact that beneath the surface, That Really Hot Chick is a better game. The only problem with this is the amount of searching you have to do to find it. The Impossible Game is simple, fun, and addictive. TRHC is a little more complicated, about the same amount of fun (depends on the situation), and just as addictive. Now to list what is right and wrong with both games.

This is based off the first half or so of the IG and me almost beating the first level on TRHC and playing halfway through the second level. My suggestions are what I would suggest to make the game better.

The Impossible Game is simple. There are only a few things not to do, land on spikes, land in pits, or hit blocks head on. You can pu down flags if you want, but that will activate practice mode, which is perfect for less experienced gamers. Very simple gameplay premise, but no story. The practice mode is a huge draw to the casual crowd who like the idea of the game, but don’t like the lack of in game checkpoints. Very nice how the screen doesn’t move unless it needs too. The music synching with gameplay is awesome. My praise here is that it seems the music was made based off the game, not the other way around. This game is almost too short though, and paying for a level pack with 2 levels is a great deal, but not exactly what I would consider “giving back” to your fans for the crazy amount of money you made off the game.

TRHC has the same general premise, but it is a bit more complicated and muddled by having a lot more items. TRHC has more levels, and a generic story that at least gives reason to why you are running from your predator. There is also a bit of confusion as to what you can land on, and what you have to avoid completely. Obviously avoid rakes and spikes and you can jump on rocks, crates, barrels, boxes, etc. Then there are odd things that you can never be to sure of like colored box shaped items in the first level. Also the leaves look like a background effect, not an obstacle, and can really mess you up. For example, the first level has farm animals in the background that confuse you and the second level has tree stumps in the background that confuse you.

The different environments are refreshing, I would be so annoyed if I ran through a farm yard for 5 levels. This also leads me into my commending the developer for all of the graphical detail he adds. Yes, sometimes it confuses gameplay, but mostly it just looks good.

Also, there are parts of the level where the game plays itself  for 20 seconds or so. This is a nice break sometimes, but usually just makes me even more frustrated when I die because I have to sit through that part again. I think those parts are there because the game is based off the music. It should be the other way around.

The music is way better than the IG music in my opinion. I am a fan of rock, and like how the game is synched with the music.

This leads me into the one problem I did not notice until my girlfriend pointed it out, and after she showed me I realized what an impact it had. The graphics of the jumping. In the Impossible Game the screen does not go up and down with the block, only when  it goes above a certain point. Basically the camera follows the block horizontally, but only vertically when need be. This is a problem in TRHC because the camera moves with every movement, and the chick moves a whole lot. This leads to the camera being jittery and it induces a small headache after awhile. This is the problem that bugs me the most, if this was fixed the game would be a ton better.

The Casual Perspective

I might start using this more often.  I know a lot of gamers hate the word, but whatever. My girlfriend plays enough games to know what is fun, so I will have her help (watch videos, play, etc.) and give her thought on stuff.

Today we watched the first level of the TRHC on youtube, as well as the first half of the Impossible Game. She doesn’t play games that much, but she gave her thoughts on what could be done to make the games better. Here are her thoughts: (some things I didn’t even notice)

The IG:

— Cool graphics
— Not a fan of losing her progress
–Likes the flag checkpoint system

TRHC:

— Disappointed with the lack of a checkpoint system
— “Why does the screen move with the chick on every move? That hurts my eyes a little” (something I didn’t notice, but  I agree)
— Did not like background objects that don’t matter

My suggestions for each game:

The IG:
–More levels (obviously, and no the level pack doesn’t count).
–Sometimes the old spike and block combo could be a bit more improved with a bigger selection of items to have in the game. Like a theme section, or better yet more levels with different themes of items and such.

TRHC:
–Make things more colorful and visible against the backdrop. I have no problems with this because of my good vision, but someone I asked couldn’t see the rakes because they were too dim.
–Add a practice mode to appeal to a ton more people.
–Take all things out of the background that could be confused with obstacle. Tactors and cows are fine, tree stumps and chickens are not
–Last paragraph of my impressions needs to be adressed. It is a major problem, probably the biggest of the whole game.
— Take out parts of level where the game plays itself, about 45 seconds to a minute worth in the first level alone.

Edge so far?: It is pretty much a slight advantage to TRHC right now. This is because TRHC is fun, even though it is frustrating to deal with the faults. And the fun lasts longer due to having more levels. Although, recognize that TRHC would be leagues ahead of the IG if a few things were addressed.
